On Sept 7th 2022, Ian Vaughan (Varnish) and Guy Ray (Intel) spoke about their collaborations to reduce their energy consumption at the www.greeningofstreaming.org's Sustainability in Streaming and Digital Media Delivery: Greening of Streaming's 2nd Annual Summit.
Ian set the scene talking about Varnish's role in providing the caching infrastructure at the edge of the CDN.
"Caching helps reduce infrastructure needs, moving content to the edge, reducing network hops and lowering hardware overheads. These all combine to reducing overall power needs. Its effectiveness depends on the cache performance and throughput, and that is something we have been working on with Intel."
Ian went on to talk about the timeline of their work with Intel, and the advances they had made together over the past few years, with a particular focus on improving the performance of the hardware that was already in place.
Guy talked about the Intel Xeon Scalable Processors, and their suitability to enhance caching in CDNs.
"The Xeon accelerators improve performance, and make the system more power efficient."
